Who are English Language Learners (ELL)?

English Language Learners (ELL) refers specifically to students who are in the process of acquiring proficiency in English as a new language. This group typically includes non-native speakers who may have varying degrees of ability in English, from complete beginners to those who can communicate effectively but still have gaps in their language skills.

The designation of ELL is important in educational contexts because it helps educators identify students who may need additional support to succeed in an English-language learning environment. Schools often implement specific programs and tailored instruction for ELL students to help them improve their language skills and achieve academic success alongside their native-speaking peers.

In contrast, students proficient in English do not fall under this category, as they have already acquired the language skills necessary for effective communication and academic performance. Teachers specializing in English as a Second Language (ESL) focus on teaching English to ELLs but are not considered ELLs themselves. Similarly, students studying abroad might be learning in a different language context but are not specifically labeled as ELL unless English is their new language being learned.
